1. Think about your current lifestyle

– are you the active type or are you the more laid back type?
– have you got kids?
– do you have some disposable income for unexpected vet visits? What about getting pet insurance?
– do you go on holidays often? You must know what to do with your dog when you leave

2. What are your expectations?

-do you prefer a large dog, a medium, or a small dog? 
– do you like short hair, curly, wiry or long coated one?
– how much time can you commit to grooming your dog? Or avail of the services of a groomer? 
– do you want a hiking companion, running mate, or a dog to walk ?

3. Learn about the breed or breed make up of your chosen dog

– make a short list of the dogs that you want. 
– temperament, diet, size, grooming needs
– purchase from a reputable breeder, or adopt from a local shelter
– consider the potential hereditary issues  that can afflict your dog

4. Consider the nature of your chose dog

– does this dog shed a lot? Will this bother you?
– do you have other pets at home? Will this dog tolerate other pets?
– some dogs are more talkative than others- some are prone to barking unreasonably than others. Consider your neighbours’ tolerance to dog’s bark.

5. Does your dog’s physical appearance or looks matter to you?

– do you prefer flat-face breeds? There are potential costs associated with pug-nosed breeds
-do you like fluffier, curly haired dog, or a dog with long and straight coat? Consider intensive grooming
